Recently, the COVID-19 coronavirus has been announced as a Global pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO). As the coronavirus spread to most of the countries in the world with an increasingly high speed, people start to panic and worry about the well being of not only ourselves, but also our countries and states. However, although we have been fighting against this virus for a couple of months now, many of us still don’t quite know about the nature of the coronavirus. What is the coronavirus? How do we know if we, or people around us has caught the virus? And how to prevent ourselves from being infected by the virus and stay healthy? In order to let you know more about the enemy that we are fighting against, today we have prepared some basic information about the coronavirus. Learn some of the knowledges introduced today, and I’m sure you can be better prepared to fight the coronavirus.

Part 1: What is coronavirus?

In medical terms, Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that cause disease in animals. Seven, including the new virus found lately, have made the jump to humans, but most just cause cold-like symptoms.

The Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the latest discovered new coronavirus. The disease causes respiratory illness (like the flu) with symptoms such as a cough, fever, and in more severe cases, difficulty breathing. COVID-19 firstly appeared in Wuhan, a city in China, in December 2019. Although health officials are still tracing the exact source of this new coronavirus, early hypotheses thought it may be linked to a seafood market in Wuhan, China. But as we learn more about the virus, more evidences have shown than the virus could have actually appeared in Italy or the US before it was initially diagnosed in Wuhan, China.

No matter where the source is, one thing that we can be sure is that the virus is deadly. As of March 2020, more than 15,000 deaths have been attributed to COVID-19. And as of now, there is not a specific treatment for the virus. People who become sick from COVID-19 should be treated with supportive measures: those that relieve symptoms. For severe cases, there may be additional options for treatment, including research drugs and therapeutics.

Although the situation is severe, we should not be too afraid of this virus outbreak. There are already more than 100 thousand people have recovered from the illness, and the number is still growing. As long as we keep learning more about the virus and do our own parts to help slow down the spread of the virus, we should get over this challenge and win the fight eventually.

Part 2: the signs and symptoms of COVID-19

According to WHO, most people infected with the COVID-19 virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. Older people, and those with underlying medical problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer are more likely to develop serious illness. The following symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure (based on the incubation period of MERS-CoV viruses):

Fever
Cough
Shortness of breath.

Also, if you develop emergency warning signs for COVID-19, you should get medical attention immediately. Emergency warning signs include:
Trouble breathing
Persistent pain or pressure in the chest
New confusion or inability to arouse
Bluish lips or face

Be noted that the signs and symptoms mentioned above are not all inclusive. You should consult your medical provider for any other symptoms that are severe or concerning.

Part 3: What should I do to prevent catching and spreading the virus?

The COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose when an infected person coughs or sneezes, so it’s important that you also practice respiratory etiquette. Besides protecting your self from being infected by not touching your face, here are some things that you can, and should, do to help slow down the spread of the COVID-19.

Wear a face mask
Wearing face masks has been proven effective to slow down the spread of the virus. In China’s successful early practices fighting against the virus, face masks took a very important role in the entire process. When you go to public areas or places, wearing a face mask can effectively reduce your chance of getting infected. Also, if you happen to carry the virus but there are still no shown symptoms, a face mask can also prevent you from infecting your friends, families or other people around you. When you wear a face mask, you need to make sure to clean your hands in advance, and dispose of the used face mask immediately after it’s used. An N-95 mask can provide a better protection for you, but normally speaking, if you are not going to heavily contaminated areas, a regular surgery mask is well enough.

Wash your hands
The coronavirus spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose, and it also spreads when a person touches a surface or object that has the virus on it, then touches their eyes, nose, or mouth. In that case, washing your hands frequently could help reduce your chance of getting infected. You can also use an alcohol-based rub to clean your hands. Just remember not to touch anything, especially your face before washing your hands when you get back home from outside.

Self-isolate
It is suggested that, during this coronavirus pandemic, you and your families should avoid going out and making contact with people. And if necessary, you should prepare enough supplies and self-isolate for a while. Self-isolation means staying indoors and completely avoiding contact with other people. With the fast spread of the coronavirus, every time you go out side there is a higher chance that you may get infected. Also, you must to do this if you already have symptoms of coronavirus, this is to stop other people from getting it. While self-isolating, you need to remember to keep a positive mind and stay optimistic. You can watch a movie once in a while or do some in-door physical exercises with your families.
