On iPhone X, the Home button is gone for a good reason. The edge-to-edge display looks gorgeous on iPhone X without the Home button taking up a lot of space like it did on iPhone 8/8 plus. But it comes with certain compromises. We used to do a lot of things with the Home button. Now with it gone, Apple has to come up with a new way to perform certain tasks that we used to do with the Home button, like entering DFU mode. On iPhone X DFU mode still works but you have to enter it in a slightly different way. And as for the iPhone 8 and 8 plus, the Home button on them are also different than the old one because you can’t actually press them down. They are now capacitive like on the iPhone 7 and 7 plus. So entering DFU mode on iPhone 8 and 8 plus is also a little tricky, too. And the iPhone DFU mode is useful when your iPhone is not stable and acts up all the time. You can use DFU mode to restore your iPhone X to factory settings and set it up as new. It’s not the most ideal solution to problems like that but at least it’ll work most of the time. Here’s how to enter the iPhone X DFU mode, and as is mentioned before, you can also use the same method to enter DFU mode on iPhone 8.

iPhone X DFU Mode: How to enter it without a Home button?

Please note that using DFU mode to restore your iPhone in iTunes will delete all data on your iPhone, so before you start, remember to back it up with iTunes or iCloud first.

  • Step 1. Use a lightning cable to connect your iPhone X to your computer and then open iTunes.
  • Step 2. Power off your iPhone X by going to Settings>General>Shut Down.
  • Step 3. When your iPhone X is completely turned off, press and hold the Side(a.k.a. the On/Off) button for 3 seconds.
  • Step 4. Keep holding the Side button and start to press and hold the Volume Down button for 10 seconds.
  • Step 5. Release the Side button and keep pressing the Volume Down button for about 5 seconds.

If your iPhone X's screen stays black and you see a popup from iTunes saying that iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode, then you’ve successfully entered DFU mode on iPhone X. But if you see the iTunes icon or the Apple logo on your screen, that means you’ll have to start all over again.

After entering DFU mode, choose Restore iPhone on the iTunes interface and follow the instructions to restore your iPhone to factory settings.

On iPhone X DFU mode might not be needed as much since iOS is usually pretty stable. But you can't completely roll out the possibility of it acting up during usage.
