Microsoft released several new products two days, including its new smartphone flagship Lumia 950 and Lumia 950XL that run with Windows 10 operating system. Now all of the three mainstream smartphone operating systems have updated to its latest version, but which one is the best, Windows 10, iOS 9 or Android Marshmallow?

We can make a comparison between the three operating systems so that people will have clear ideas of each OS if they haven’t decided which kind of smartphone they are going to use.

First of all, let’s check out what devices can run these latest operating systems:

Name Compatibility
Windows 10 Lumia 950, Lumia 950XL, Lumia 930, Lumia 830, Lumia 735, Lumia 640, Lumia 640XL, Lumia 540, Lumia 535, Lumia 532, Lumia 435, and Lumia 430
iOS 9 iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5, iPhone 4s
Android M Nexus 5, Nexus 6, HTC M9+, HTC E9+, HTC M8, LG G3, Motorola Moto G, Samsung S6 Edge+, etc.

As you can tell, we don’t name the tablets that can update in the list above, because we are focusing on smartphones in this post. Android 6.0 Marshmallow supports more devices than we have listed, and different smartphone companies will have different timelines of pushing OTA notifications to the devices that are capable of updating to Android M.

Secondly, when we want to know which OS is best for us, we should have a look at the UI of the operating systems on smartphones. If you have started using Windows 10 on your computer, you will feel familiar when it comes to the smartphone. It inherits the rectangle layout in home interface, and Windows logo in lock screen. iOS 9 doesn’t have many changes in home screen and lock screen, but it brings new wallpapers to iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. Also, the Live Photos can be used as lock screen wallpaper on iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. Android Marshmallow has changed little in home screen from its predecessor, but becomes more solid and simplified. Therefore, if you are going to update from an old OS to new one, you won’t find dissimilar changes; but if you switch from one OS to another, you will get a totally different using experience.

Name Home Screen and Lock Screen
Windows 10
iOS 9
Android M

Thirdly, we can look into the exact updates of the operating systems as the home screen and lock screen don’t change much in their updates. Windows 10 mainly changes the notification center, Photo app and so on in Windows 10 for smartphones and tablets. iOS 9 brings new Notes app, Low Battery Mode and more. Android M changes app display, lock screen clock and so on. We can tell that Android M makes the largest change, but it still depends whether Android Marshmallow is right for you.

Name What's New
Windows 10
  1. New looks in your home screen
  2. Totally new Outlook app
  3. Spartan browser is introduced
iOS 9
  1. New Notes app
  2. Transmit information in Maps app
  3. Totally new Spotlight search
Android M
  1. Totally new design for apps menu
  2. Stylish lock screen clock
  3. Add messages on lock screen

Last but not least, we’d like to make it clear that if you are changing from Android or Windows Mobile to iOS, you may feel a little restrained. As iOS is a close system and it doesn’t give users full authorities to handle the device, therefore if users want to add files to iPhone 6s, for example, they will have to use iTunes to finish the task.

Conclusion

Windows 10, iOS 9 and Android M are all latest, and they may still have minor bugs. If you are stick with your current operating system, you don’t have to update in a hurry. If you want to switch to a new operating system, you can keep your eyes on the latest flagship, because the latest flagships will bring you better using experience with the latest operating systems. So it’s up to you to make a decision on which operating system you want to use.
