If you collect DVDs, copying your DVD collection to your laptop would allow you to have a backup of them which can be useful when the original disc fails or got damaged by accident. You would be able to use the backup to create a new disc to replace the original one. If the DVD backup software is good enough, you’d be able to create a new copy that’s just as good as the original DVD. So for movie lovers who collect DVDs of their favorite movies, I would suggest them to have their favorite movies backed up to their laptop. It’s easy. With the right DVD copy software, they can even back up the disc losslessly, which would later allow them to make an exact 1:1 copy of the original disc. And as something that’s so fragile, backup seems necessary as you can’t guarantee you won’t drop it and scratch it one day even if you are the kind of person who hands things as careful as they can. Check out what DVD copy software you can utilize to copy DVD to laptop. And if you have a damaged DVD, I would also recommend to you a program you can use to try recovering the damaged data on it.

Step 2. Add DVD content to the program

To copy a disc, first you’ll need to add the content in the disc to DVD Copy. Like most other programs, you can add source files to the program by dragging and dropping the files to the program. Or click the Add Blu-ray/DVD button and select Add from CD-ROM from the following drop-down menu. You would then see the menu with your DVD disc on it. Click on it to add the source DVD files to the program.

Load DVD content

Step 3. Select content to copy

As the disc will contain different videos, audio tracks and subtitles, you don’t have to copy all of them if you don’t want to. You are allowed to manually choose what content to copy by using the Custom Mode which is enabled by you choosing Custom Mode at the bottom of the left sidebar. Of course, you can easily set the program to copy all the content in the disc by selecting Full Movie. You can also use Main Movie mode to copy the main movie. After choosing one mode from the 3, select a DVD format for the copy from the drop-down menu at the bottom of the left sidebar between DVD-9 and DVD-5. The choice of DVD format should be taken seriously as it’ll decide the quality of the copy. If the original disc is DVD-9 and you want a 1:1 copy, then choose DVD-9. You can also downgrade the quality by choosing DVD-5 for the copy of a DVD-9 disc to compress DVD-9 to DVD-5. FYI, the window on the right is the video player that can play the videos in the disc directly.

Step 4. Start the process

Above the video player there’s a Copy button. Click on it to call out a sidebar which contains several options we need to go through. First, as is mentioned previously, you can choose to save either the ISO image of the DVD disc or the DVD folder or both at the same time to your laptop, so you need to check DVD Folder and ISO File at the top. The third option at the top is for choosing DVD disc in the disc drive as the target. When you have a spare DVD burner and a rewritable disc, you can use this option to copy a DVD disc or a DVD folder/ISO file on your hard drive directly to a re-writable DVD. When you choose to save the DVD folder or ISO image to your hard drive, select a folder on your hard drive as the location for the files in the Save to box. And then you can start to copy DVD to laptop by clicking the Copy button at the bottom of this sidebar.

While getting DVD collection backed up is a good idea for some people. Some might prefer to have the original disc. If you got a disc that’s damaged, try recovering the data on it by using a DVD data recovery tool. Try CD Recovery Toolbox, it can help you recover damaged data on CD/DVD/Blu-ray discs. Give it a try if you have a DVD disc that you like to preserve.

How to play the DVD Backup on your computer

Depending on what form of backup you’ve created, you can actually play the backups in several different ways. It’s one of the advantages of having a backup of your DVD collection on your computer hard drive. You don’t need the disc to watch the movie every time when you feel like watching it. Both the DVD folder backup or the ISO image can be played on your computer. Here’s how to play them.

How to play DVD movie in a DVD folder

The most direct way to play the DVD movie inside a DVD folder is to find the DVD video inside the folder and use a video player to play it directly. Here’s how to find the DVD movie inside the DVD folder.

1. Open the DVD folder. Usually there will be a folder named VIDEO_TS, that’s the video folder where the DVD movies are in. Double-click on the said folder to open it.

Open DVD folder

2. You will see several different kinds of files in the folder and the movie is in VOB format. Look for the files with the .vob file extension.

Find VOB video files

3. Click on one of the VOB files to see the detailed information about the video. You can see the length, size and resolution of the video. Usually the one with the duration of more than one hour is the main movie.

VOB file information

Most DVD discs will contain multiple videos. It would take a long time to check them out one by one, here you can change the way you view the files to quickly find the target video. Right-click on the blank area of the folder and choose View>Details to see detailed information about the videos without having to click on them one by one.

You can see the size and length of every video directly. You can use the built-in Windows Media Player to directly play a VOB video file. If you prefer a smoother movie watching experience, you can also try using a third-party video player.

How to play a DVD ISO file

The DVD ISO file is an easy one. There are video players that can directly play ISO files.

The ISO player I would like to introduce to you is Leawo Blu-ray Player. It’s from the same company as the Leawo DVD Ripper we used above. It’s not just an ordinary video player, it can also play Blu-ray and DVD discs. If you use VLC as a Blu-ray player program, there’s a high chance you might not be able to play it due to the protections on the disc. But Leawo Blu-ray Player is able to play all the protected commercial Blu-ray/DVD discs with no problem. It’s not the only Blu-ray player program that’s able to play encrypted Blu-ray/DVD discs but it’s one of the few that are offered to users completely free. And playing a DVD ISO is basically a piece of cake to it.

To play a DVD ISO file, simply kick off Leawo Blu-ray Ripper and drag the source DVD ISO file to the interface. And Leawo Blu-ray Player will start playing the DVD movie inside the file automatically.

Play DVD ISO with Leawo Blu-ray Player

If you are using Windows 8 or above, then you are probably going to need a third-party video player if you want to watch Blu-ray movies on your computer and Leawo Blu-ray Player is one of the best choices you can have.
