"Backing up using the DVD Shrink: When trying to backup my TV Show DVD with DVD Shrink I can't get through the Analyzing without getting a Data Error which always is Data Error: (cyclic redundancy check) screen pop's up. Is there anything that I can do to fix CRC error when ripping DVD with DVD Shrink?"

When you are ripping DVD with DVD Shrink or other DVD ripping software tools, you may encounter the CRC error notification. What is CRC? How can you fix CRC error when ripping DVD with DVD Shrink or other DVD converter tools? Here in this guide, we would like to show you some effective solutions on fixing CRC errors during DVD ripping process.

Part 1:What is Cyclic Redundancy Check

A cyclic redundancy check, often shortened to CRC, is a mathematical function used by computers to ensure the integrity of data as it is being transferred from one location to another. If there is a problem with the transfer and the data does not match on both sides, then a cyclic redundancy check error will occur. This can happen in Windows while reading a disc or in any number of programs, including DVD Shrink.

When you encounter the CRC error during using DVD Shrink, there might show you "DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue. Failed to read File. Data error (cyclic redundancy check)". When you see this notification, it means that your DVD Shrink failed to read and load the DVD disc you have inserted to the DVD recorder drive. This mostly happen when your source DVD disc is broken, damaged, scratched, protected, etc.

Part 2: Possible Reasons that Cause CRC Error on DVD Shrink

From the above brief introduction, we have learned what CRC error is. Why does CRC error happen? In which cases will it occur? Below are the possible causes of CRC error.

1. The DVD drive is faulty.

To make sure there is no CRC error, you need firstly to make sure that your DVD drive works fine. When there's a bad component in your DVD drive, the drive will not be able to read DVD normally. Since DVD drive doesn't work properly, no DVD ripper software tools would succeed in reading and loading DVD discs.

2. The DVD disc is dirty.

If you get grubby hands on the discs or expose the DVD to the dust, the disc will be too dirty to be read properly. Therefore, make sure your DVD disc is not dusty. DVD drives only read and load clean DVD discs.

3. The DVD disc is scratched or damaged.

As mentioned above, your source DVD discs might get scratched or damaged, which will result in CRC error or other errors in reading DVD discs with DVD Shrink or other converters. Disc is very fragile and it can easily get scratched. Scratches will affect the data, thus making the DVD unreadable.

4. The DVD disc is too old.

Sometimes DVD Shrink might fail to read and load DVD discs since your DVD discs are tool old to be read. Many old DVD discs are not accepted and read properly on modern DVD players and DVD drives. Meanwhile, your source DVD content might be improperly structured, which will also result in CRC error. For example, when you rip a self-burned DVD which isn't dirty or scratched but still get a CRC error notification, the possible reason is that it is burned on a cheap and poor quality disc.

5. The DVD disc contains copy protection that DVD Shrink can't handle.

There's a statement in the support page of DVD Shrink official site saying that "Since development of DVD Shrink has been stopped in 2005 it cannot circumvent current copy protections schemes which may manifest in these errors/error messages...". We notice that one of the errors is Data Redundancy Check Error (CRC Error). That means CRC error may have something to do with the copy protection in DVD. Nowadays, more and more DVD discs are copy protected and region restricted, since DVD Shrink has been discontinued for update, DVD Shrink is quite possibly to be not able to handle the DVD disc protections, then a CRC error occurs.

DVD Shrink was not installed properly.

It could also be the issue of your DVD Shrink like unsuccessful installation, registry file corruption, software corruption, etc.

Besides the above-mentioned possible causes, there might be other reasons as well, such as hard drive corruption, mis-configured files, registry file corruption, cluttered disk, unsuccessful program installation, or when there's a bad spot on the media. With all possible causes listed, how can we fix the DVD Shrink CRC error? Let's move on.

Part 3: How to Fix the DVD Shrink CRC Error

Since we have figured out the possible causes of CRC error while ripping DVD with DVD Shrink, it's quite clear what we can do to fix the CRC error within DVD Shrink for ripping DVD discs.

Solution 1: Make sure your DVD discs could work normally

The first thing to solve CRC error in using DVD Shrink to rip DVD is of course to make sure your DVD discs work normally. Make sure your source DVD discs can be played back on different DVD players or computer normally. Make sure your DVD discs are not damaged, dusty, scratched, etc.

Solution 2: Make sure DVD drive works normally

When DVD Shrink fails to rip a DVD with CRC error, you can take out the DVD from the optical drive and put in other DVDs to see if you still meet CRC error. If the problem happens with all attempted backups, the DVD drive may be the culprit and a new drive may be the solution.

Solution 3: Repair DVD discs if necessary

If your source DVD discs are damaged or the internal data couldn't be properly played back, try to repair your DVD disc first.

Solution 4: Make sure DVD Shrink is well installed

Make sure you have installed DVD Shrink completely and normally. There is no error of registry file, software corruption, etc. You can normally run DVD Shrink on your computer.

Solution 5. Make sure your DVD discs are friendly for ripping

If both DVD drive and DVD disc are flawless, CRC error is probably caused by certain DVD copy protection scheme that DVD Shrink cannot handle, as mentioned above. To fix encryption-caused CRC error, you're suggested to try ripping protected DVDs with DVD Shrink alternatives. There are quite a few tools to help you rip and convert copy-protected DVD discs that DVD Shrink can't do, as showed below.
