Recently, I come across a question in a forum: As far as I know, CD quality for mp3s is at least 128 kbps. What should the video bitrate be to obtain DVD quality? Then it comes to the concerts, what is the best bitrate for DVD encoding? In this post, I will show you how to choose best bitrate for DVD encoding and how to rip DVD with best video bitrate using DVD encoder.

Part 1: Best bitrate for DVD encoding

Before answering the best bitrate for DVD rip, we need to figure out what DVD video bitrate is at first. Obviously, video bitrate is the number of bits that are processed in a unit of time. Note that 1 byte consists of 8 bits. Video data rates are given in bits per second. Therefore, the data rate for a video file is the bitrate. In general, a higher bitrate will accommodate higher image quality in the video output.

When it comes to choosing the best bitrate for DVD encoding, it is important to take into account what device your videos will be played on. As we all know, internet videos, phone videos, and HD Blu-ray videos for TV all vary in bitrate. The bitrate for an HD Blu-ray video is typically in the range of 20 Mbps, standard-definition DVD is usually 6 Mbps, high-quality web video often runs at about 2 Mbps, and video for phones is typically given in the kilobits (kbps).
We can take the MPEG Bitrate as an example. Each resolution has an approximate bit-rate maximum, while sufficient bits can be allocated to each pixel. The MPEG supports bit-rates well into the double-digits, it will likely not use it, and the outcome is simply a bloated file.

352x240/288 = 2.0 MB/s or 2000k max
352x480/576 = 4.0 MB/s or 4000k max
720x480/576 = 8.0 MB/s or 8000k max (same for the 704x480/576 variation)

MPEG also offers an option of VBR (Variable Bit-rate) or CBR (Constant Bit-rate). Constant bitrate (CBR) encoding maintains a set bitrate over the entire video clip, but limits the image quality in most cases. Usually, CBR is often not an optimal choice for streaming, for it does not allocate enough data for the complex segments. VBR is our default processing mode and will typically produce significantly higher quality at similar bitrates. The primary benefit of VBR encoding is that it allocates a higher bitrate to the more complex segments of media files and lower bitrates to the simple segments.
Below, you can view the graph which has illustrated the quality that can be found with various bit-rates:

So, consider what platform your video will be viewed on prior to selecting your bitrate. Once you have determined how you will be viewing your DVD, you can use video encoding below to apply VBR bitrate to your media files.

Below we will recommend a tool for detecting bitrate and codecs. MediaInfo (Website: https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo) is a nice basic tool for quickly seeing all the parameters on any video or audio files. With MediaInfo, you can not only read many video and audio file formats, but also customize these viewing formats. Generally, the MediaInfo data display the Container (format, profile, commercial name of the format), Video (format, codec id, aspect, frame rate, bit rate, color space, chroma subsampling, bit depth, scan type), Audio, Text and Chapters. And the MediaInfo analytics include Container, Tags, Video and Audio Subtitle.
