HandBrake is available for Linux, macOS, and Windows. It uses third-party libraries such as FFmpeg, libvpx, and x265.

While in the same category, MakeMKV is a one-click solution to convert video that you own into free and patents-unencumbered format that can be played everywhere. MakeMKV is a format converter, otherwise called "transcoder". It converts the video clips from the proprietary (and usually encrypted) disc into a set of MKV files, preserving most information but not changing it in any way. The MKV format can store multiple video/audio tracks with all meta-information and preserve chapters. There are many players that can play MKV files nearly on all platforms, and there are tools to convert MKV files to many formats, including DVD and Blu-ray discs.

Aforesaid, both Handbrake and MakeMKV are able to rip blu-ray and the difference between them lies in that Handbrake is used to rip and transcode the file while all MakeMKV does is save what's on the blu-ray to a .MKV file. It doesn't change anything. Find more details from the following section.

Part 2: Comparison between these two programs

I don't want to start a verbal fight between Handbrake and MakeMKV but simply provide a reasonable comparison between the two programs so that users can have a clearer idea about their features and limits.

As said, MakeMKV just puts the native video stream into an MKV container whereas handbrake transcodes the native stream using x264 to compress it. In terms of time, space and speed, they can be different as well. Handbrake needs to take a longer period of time to compress the video and the resulting file size is smaller than the source one. And it will be slower to complete the process; as to how long and slow to compress the file, it depends on the CPU power and the source file size. On the contrary, MakeMKV is doing nothing to the source streams other than putting them into a different container, which requires the same space and the speed depends on how fast DVD drive can rip the video off the disk. Both Handbrake and MakeMKV have pros and cons and you can pick your favorite one to rip blu-ray. However, there are other options if you don't feel good about the above two programs.

Part 3: Introduce one alternative to rip Blu-ray

To rip blu-ray is not new and almost every media tool developer will publish an app in this category.
