Part 1: Why I Tried Movavi Screen Recorder?
As I mentioned before, my job often includes creating software demonstration tutorials and recording online meeting. Therefore, finding a screen recording tool that can meet professional requirements and is easy to use has become extremely important. This is also why I decided to try Movavi Screen Recorder.
Part 2: Features I Tried During My Test
I conducted a comprehensive test of its core functions. Below are my detailed usage experiences and evaluations of each function.
1. Screen Recording
As the core function of Movavi Screen Recorder, the screen recording performance impressed me greatly. The software offers very flexible recording options, allowing me to switch easily between full screen, custom area, or a specific window according to my needs. I also checked its webcam support, and it does allow picture-in-picture recording, with adjustable placement on screen. In my experience, both features work smoothly without much setup.
2. Audio Recording
When creating professional tutorial videos, I highly value the flexibility of the audio recording. I found that Movavi Screen Recorder allows me to choose the audio source to be recorded, I tried to capture system audio and microphone sounds, and its performance is pleasing. What surprised me even more is that it also provides an “only record audio” mode. This is practical for me when I occasionally need to create podcast or meeting recordings. I can directly capture the sound without enabling screen recording.
3. Extra Tools
Apart from the basic recording function, I also discovered some extra tools that surprised me. During the recording process, I found that the software has a screenshot feature. And I could also make annotations when recording. I could even save long web pages using the scrolling screenshot function, which was very helpful for me to organize my materials. However, what made me feel the most relieved was the “scheduled recording”. After I set the time, the software automatically captured the meeting without any manual intervention. Besides, when I output the recorded content, I found it also has a built-in editing features. This has saved me a lot of time to switch to another app to edit my videos.
Part 3: My Recording Tests
I conducted tests in three typical usage scenarios, focusing on its stability during long-term recording, the ability to capture DRM content, and the quality and smoothness of game recording.
1. Recording a Zoom Meeting
First, I tested the recording of a 90-minute Zoom online seminar, aiming to evaluate the stability and resource usage of the software during a long recording process. The recording parameters were as follows:
1) Full-screen recording mode
2) Capture system audio and microphone
3) Enable webcam overlay function, with frame rate set to 30fpsThe test results were pleasing. The recording was smooth and stable during the whole process, no obvious crashes or interruptions occurring. The CPU usage was 15-20%, and it didn’t affect the meeting. The 90-minute video only occupied 2.3GB of space.
2. Recording a Streaming Video
The second test scenario was recording video content from a streaming platform to assess its ability to handle DRM-protected content. When trying to record on Netflix and Amazon Premium member videos, the software had technical limitations when processing the copyrighted content. While the screen capture was normal when recording Netflix, the system audio capture failed. When recording Amazon Prime Video, a black screen occurred and only the audio track remained.
3. Record Gameplay
The last test scenario was gameplay recording. I chose two games, “Cyberpunk 2077” and “League of Legends”. The focus was on evaluating the output of graphics quality and the performance of system load. The test results showed that when recording “Cyberpunk 2077”, the game frame rate dropped by 5-8 fps, and the video quality was clear and smooth with no obvious lag; the process of recording “League of Legends” was even smoother, with almost no delay.
Part 4: What I Liked and Didn't Like About Movavi
After conducting all the tests, I have gained a deep understanding of Movavi Screen Recorder. Here are my objective evaluations of this software, including its strengths and areas that need improvement.
|
What I Liked |
1) It has a simple user interface. |
|
What I Didn't Like |
1) The trial version has certain functional limitations. |
Part 5: Alternatives I Also Considered
While evaluating Movavi Screen Recorder, I also studied and tested several alternative products available on the market. Each software has its own unique advantages, meeting different needs.
1. Leawo Free Screen Recorder
The first alternative I tried is Leawo Free Screen Recorder. In my practical use, I found that the software can screen record YouTube videos and other streaming services with no limits, including those protected by DRM technology, which has complemented the shortcoming of Movavi Screen Recorder. What surprised me most is that it’s completely free. If you are budget-sensitive but still want to find a professional recording tool, then I think this free screen recorder may meet your needs.

-
4-in-1 screen recorder suite to record gameplay, tutorial, training video, lecture, reaction video, webninar video, etc.
- Free online recorder to record window, browser tab or entire screen online.
- Free screen recorder to record screen in full-screen or custom area at up to 4K to MP4.
- Free webcam recorder to record webcam video.
- Free audio recorder to record audio from microphone or computer to MP3.
- Free screenshot snapper to snap screenshot to JPG.
2. OBS Studio
Many people say that OBS Studio is designed for live streaming and video recording. Therefore, I gave it a try. Upon using it, OBS Studio really impressed me with its strong and free features. It can meet almost all my recording needs. But due to these features, it cost me a great amount of time to learn how to set the right parameters, which may not be suitable for users who only need simple recording.
3. Loom
Based on my usage experience, Loom is more like a convenient communication tool rather than a recording device. It is easy to use and once the recording is completed, a shareable link can be generated immediately, saving me a lot of time for communication with my team. However, I found that it is not suitable for high-quality video production. Its recording quality and editing functions are basic, and the free version has some limitations. Overall, I think the Loom screen recorder is suitable for quick recording, but not for professional content creation.
Part 5: Alternatives I Also Considered
Overall, after all experiments, it’s safe for me to conclude that although Movavi Screen Recorder has some limitations, it can still be a suitable recording tool, because it has a simple interface and stable recording performance. Of course, if your budget is limited or you have higher requirements for recording, I highly recommend trying the three alternative tools mentioned above. Especially Leawo Free Screen Recorder, which is not only free but also can bypass DRM to record protected content. For an editor like me who often needs to capture various video materials, it is a cost-effective and ideal choice.
