Part 4: Monster Hunter Movie Review
Monster Hunter is a feature action-adventure movie adaption based on the video game by Capcom. In this movie, Milla Jovovich plays the heroine role the Captain Natalie Artemis, while Tony Jaa is credited as “The Hunter”. When Lt. Artemis and her loyal soldiers are on a peril-laden mission, they are transported to a new world due to a strange storm. There, they are trapped in a barren desert-world rife with formidable adversaries and subterranean sand-dwelling beasts, they are shocked to discover that their otherwise destructive military weapons are now entirely inadequate to take down these terrifying enemies. Unexpectedly, they stumble upon a mysterious local hunter who has mastered some unique skills that allow him to get the upper hand against these powerful creatures. He taught Artemis and her military unit that every monster could be defeated in some way. They united together and established a deep friendship while fighting against these powerful enemies.
IMDb rated 5.3/10 stars for Monster Hunter. As a matter of fact, some negative comments are given to this movie and many movie critics were disappointed to the thin plot. Someone criticized that Paul W.S. Anderson was filming yet another video game series in a bad way after watching Monster Hunter. Paul W.S. Anderson seemed to have started a new video game series filming after closing the film adaptations of the Resident Evil video game series. He thought that most video game adaptations turned out badly and were often more entertaining for those who were familiar with the video game the movie was based on. Unfortunately, this was also the case for this movie, because the movie lacked a real story. There was no clear explanation of what exactly happened in the movie, which was not so pleasant as it was to those who were unfamiliar with the video game the movie was adapted on. People familiar with the video game or playing the game themselves could probably understand this movie a little better. Moreover, the movie jumped from short, moving action scene to the next and used a lot of unnecessary slow-motion effects, which only made it more difficult to follow and unnecessarily long-winded.
In addition, the characters in the movie were not as intriguing as expected. Milla Jovovich, the director’s wife and long-time muse, taken over in the newly invented role of Captain Natalie Artemis, a no-nonsense, no-personality U.S. Army Ranger in charge of a UN military team so bland. The military team made the average video game NPC so plain that they felt like only Cannon fodders who sacrificed themselves to be Artemis’s growing experience. As for Jaa who taken over this role, he was just afforded a small handful of scattered chances to show off his gifts as a martial artist. Since the Hunter in this movie didn’t show any talent except to leap, grimace, and stare longingly at an engagement ring that never became relevant in any way whatsoever. Anderson painted the Hunter as a useful idiot, but they’ll only make it across the desert if they worked together.
The creature design was not satisfying as expected either. The so-called powerful and terrifying creature design wasn’t even as elaborate or detailed as the games, feeling like the bare minimum required to satisfy a memo to an effect studio that said “make a big monster.” Some of the creature design in the “RE” movies could be grotesquely creative, but the decisions here in terms of monsters felt safe and boring.
